The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park located southwest of Uganda (8-10 hr drive) from Kampala Capital – a famous spot for the spectacular Gorilla Trekking experience and a UNESCO designated World Heritage Site in recognition of its rich and unique ecosystem. It spans 331 km² (128 mi²) of jungle forests comprising both montane and lowland forest accessible only on foot. Bwindi National Park is most notable for being home of over 400 of the world’s critically endangered estimate of 880 (November 2012) mountain gorilla population, which has been under protection since 1964. There are 12 habituated mountain gorilla families/groups open to tourism here. To visit, you must obtain a Uganda Wildlife Authority gorilla permit in advance and be escorted to the gorillas by (UWA) guides along with other available trackers. Below is a 3 day gorilla tracking (trekking) safari tour prepared with you at the back of our minds to create a memorable experience of the Pearl of Africa – Uganda.
Day 1: We depart Kampala at an early hour for your Bwindi Impenetrable Forest Mountain Gorilla Tracking (Trekking) adventure. Lunch at Mbarara at the Lake view Hotel then off again through some of beautiful countryside of Uganda toward Bwindi Forest for our much anticipated rendezvous with the world's critically endangered mountain gorillas of Uganda.
We reach our destination late afternoon for rest and relaxation and dinner at the Bwindi Forest accommodation of your choice not far from the gorilla family you are visiting the next morning. The location of lodging depends on where your permits are for in the park. – A well deserved rest preparing for the Gorilla Tracking (trekking) experience the next day, but tonight you are sleeping in an African Rainforest that is home to half of the world’s Mountain Gorillas.
Day 2: Have an early breakfast and be at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest National Park offices for the Mountain Gorilla Tracking (Trekking) orientation and meeting with guides and other trackers (if any). Small groups not exceeding 8 trackers/gorilla family will enter into the Forest for a day. Take a packed lunch, you will need it,...its included in your room price and not refundable once missed.
Then it is off for your own Gorillas in the Mist experience. Beautiful hike through the jungle. Mist and clouds rolling in randomly. Tons of birds and noises, a few monkeys. You are hiking through this mysterious and magnificent forest where there is much else to see on your way to your Mountain Gorilla Group. The flora and fauna, the other primates, mammals, birds, butterflies will be most beautiful and only enhance this very special day.
Time taken may vary depending on the terrain and movement of these gentle giants. Mountain gorillas never stay in one place twice; they move and build a new nest every day so there is nothing like closest or farthest gorilla family, but the treks may be different. The excitement of meeting face to face is so rewarding.
The tracking (trekking) can involve some rigorous climbing and hiking but then you are face to face with these powerful Mountain Gorillas, observing them just a few meters from you watching the group, mothers with a baby, the gorillas doing their daily routine and you are there. You will not find the mountain gorillas in any zoo, but only in this small section of Africa where the remaining mountain gorillas are found.
Fortunately and due to much work they are thriving and surviving here at Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and you are there seeing them up close and personal. Afterwards it is a return to headquarters depending on time and your energy levels a village walk, where you will see traditional ways, from brewing of beer to remedies made from the forest. There will be some dancing and entertainment as you observe the ways of the local people and it is certainly worth your while.
Day 3: It is breakfast and checkout, afterwards and a journey back to Kampala, on the way we stop at Mbarara for lunch stop of, then on to at the Equator for picture taking and continue our drive to Kampala.
